Songs of Farewell – An Evening of Funeral Songs

On Saturday, 31 October, at 7 pm, Krpanov dom in Pivka will host Songs of Farewell – An Evening of Funeral Songs for the third consecutive year. The only event of its kind in Slovenia, it highlights the fading traditions surrounding death and farewell at a time of year when we remember those who have passed away.

Although the shadow of death has accompanied humanity since the dawn of self-awareness, modern society keeps death behind the walls of hospitals, care homes, hospices and funeral parlours – away from our homes and everyday lives. In a single generation, we have lost the tradition of keeping vigil beside the deceased, the objects associated with funeral rites, and the rituals that once accompanied the departed on their journey to the next world.

As mourning customs and funeral traditions disappear, song seems to remain the most tangible expression of farewell, perhaps the last surviving thread of these ancient rites. Funeral songs were sung on the day of the burial – as the deceased left home, while the coffin was carried, at the cemetery and at the gathering after the funeral.

On the eve of All Saints’ Day, acclaimed folk musicians and choirs will come together to share songs and anecdotes, honouring the memory of loved ones, theirs and ours.
