Ecomuseum of the Seasonal Lakes of Pivka

The Ecomuseum of the Seasonal Lakes of Pivka presents the story of water in the Karst world of Upper Pivka. The specific geological composition of the area in combination with the irregularly distributed rainfall creates drastic changes in the water level of the Karst groundwater. At high water, as many as seventeen seasonal lakes form at the bottom of the valley. In order to learn about their formation, you have to spin a special mill wheel. Stories of individual lakes also tell us of the life of the locals in this landscape, where there can be a shortage or an abundance of water. Here, we find a rich diversity of plant and animal species, which have already disappeared or are endangered elsewhere. Researchers counted 182 species of plants, 211 species of beetles, 106 species of butterflies and 133 species of birds, while the area is also home to wild beasts, such as the brown bear, the wolf and the lynx.
