Carnival Has Arrived!
In Ilirska Bistrica, carnival season is marked by the škoromati – the oldest surviving carnival custom in this part of Europe. The masks are divided into benevolent and malevolent characters, led by the kleščar, a striking figure who chases spectators with his enormous tongs.
These ancient carnival characters from the Brkini Hills and the surrounding area symbolically chase away the winter with the ringing of bells, loud cries, rhythmic marching and playful antics. Since 2012, the škoromati tradition has been inscribed in Slovenia’s Register of Intangible Cultural Heritage. One of the most important customs is the poberija, which involves carnival groups going from house to house and collecting gifts while wishing their hosts health, happiness and prosperity.
The renowned carnival parade through the streets of Ilirska Bistrica brings together the škoromati and other traditional masks, modern carnival characters, children’s parades, carnival dances and exhibitions of masks.
