Carnival in Postojna

Carnival Has Arrived!
In Ilirska Bistrica, carnival season is marked by the škoromati – the oldest surviving carnival custom in this part of Europe. The masks are divided into benevolent and malevolent characters, led by the kleščar, a striking figure who chases spectators with his enormous tongs.

Carnival in Cerknica
For half a century, this small town located at the foot of Slivnica – the hill supposed to be inhabited by witches – has preserved one of Slovenia’s most famous carnival traditions. From Fat Thursday to Ash Wednesday, Cerknica comes alive with the legendary butalci (fools), witches, the Water Man, the Giant Pike, and a host of other carnival characters.
