Green Karst – Accessible to Everyone

At Green Karst, we strive to be accessible to all visitors. Special attention is given to people with mobility impairments, blind and partially sighted visitors, deaf and hard-of-hearing visitors, people with intellectual disabilities, seniors, and families with strollers. Several attractions and visitor centers offer adapted access routes and pathways, elevators and ramps, tactile content and Braille signage, audio descriptions, adapted guided tours, elevators, and programs that enable independent exploration of the region. Accommodation with Accessible Facilities.

Accommodation with Accessible Facilities

Several accommodations offer adapted rooms and accessible entrances. We especially recommend Youth Hostel Ars Viva in Loška dolina, considered one of the most accessible accommodations for people with mobility impairments in Slovenia. In addition to rooms and apartments, all bathrooms are adapted for wheelchair users. Adapted bicycles and tricycles are available, accessible van transport can be arranged, and special packages for visitors with mobility impairments are offered.

Attractions

  • Postojna Cave: Accessible parking spaces, adapted entrances, and accessible restrooms are available for visitors with mobility impairments. The cave path is made of non-slip concrete and has no stairs, but includes a steeper ramp approximately 200 meters long with an elevation gain of around 40 meters, followed by a similar descent (20 % incline). Visitors with mobility impairments who require a wheelchair and/or assistance are advised to take the train-only section of the tour. A full tour is also possible with the help of an accompanying person who can assist on the ramp sections. The walking path through the cave is 1.2 km long. Visitors with mobility impairments and their companions can purchase tickets at a 50 % discount upon presentation of valid disability documentation (available only at the ticket office). Wheelchair users must book at least two days in advance. The Expo Cave Karst exhibition and the Vivarium are also accessible to wheelchair users.
  • DINA Large Carnivores Centre: The center offers two marked disabled parking spaces, ramp access to the building, and accessible restrooms on the basement level, reachable by elevator. For blind and partially sighted visitors, tactile floor plans and Braille signs are available. The content of the interactive Zverbook stations is also available in Flipbook format, while VR headsets with audio descriptions provide a unique experience. The film “Large Carnivores Know No Borders” includes subtitles, and videos in the center are presented without sound. Eight portable hearing loops are available free of charge for guided groups, and all assistive devices can be borrowed at reception.
  • Ecomuseum of the Pivka Intermittent Lakes: One disabled parking space is available in front of the building. Since the museum spans in two floors, an elevator intended for visitors with mobility impairments is provided. Accessible restrooms are also available. Interior passages are sufficiently wide and barrier-free. Eight portable hearing loops are available for guided groups.
  • Park of Military History Pivka: The museum provides disabled parking spaces, ramps at the entrances to all exhibition pavilions, and accessible restrooms. The pavilions and the Command building are accessible by elevator. Virtual tours of the submarine and military vehicles are available, along with miniature exhibits and QR codes in sign language. Additional accessible facilities include the Kantina Pivka refreshment area, open depots of three national museums, and a souvenir shop.
  • Cerknica Lake Visitor Centre: The center provides three parking spaces for visitors with disabilities, an accessible entrance via a lifting platform to the first floor, and adapted restrooms. Tactile and audio content is available throughout the exhibition, enabling blind and partially sighted visitors to explore content through Braille and audio recordings. Visitors with mobility impairments can explore the first section of the Drvošec trail along a gravel road, as well as parts of Lake Cerknica, including sinkholes when the lake is dry. Informational boards are placed along the route. Admission to the visitor center is free upon presentation of a valid disability card. The “Kuharca” educational points are adapted for blind and partially sighted visitors with Braille inscriptions and recorded sounds of the lake.
  • Museum of Lake Cerknica: A parking space reserved for disabled visitors is available. All entrances on the ground floor are wheelchair accessible, allowing visitors to explore the live model of Lake Cerknica, the Geological Classroom, the exhibition “Pavel Kunaver and Lake Cerknica,” and the multimedia presentation “Four Seasons at Lake Cerknica.” Outside the museum, an Ethnological Park presents a workshop for traditional wooden lake boat construction, a collection of tools used for life by the lake, and the interactive display “100 Birds of Lake Cerknica,” where visitors can learn about local bird species through images, descriptions, and sounds. Museum visits are arranged in advance and conducted with a guide.
  • Notranjska Museum Postojna: Wheelchair users can access the museum from the parking area via the left side entrance equipped with an access ramp. All exhibition areas are accessible by elevator, and restrooms are located on the ground floor. The museum also includes tactile guidance paths and various touchable replicas. Tactile maps, magnifiers, and copies of objects for touching are available. Throughout the museum, 19 QR code stations provide sign language and international sign presentations for deaf and hard-of-hearing visitors. Visitors using hearing aids can borrow induction hearing loops free of charge at reception. These are available in Slovenian, German, and Italian.
