Carnival in Cerknica
For half a century, this small town located at the foot of Slivnica – the hill supposed to be inhabited by witches – has preserved one of Slovenia’s most famous carnival traditions. From Fat Thursday to Ash Wednesday, Cerknica comes alive with the legendary butalci (fools), witches, the Water Man, the Giant Pike, and a host of other carnival characters.
Following the lively carnival festivities on Friday and Saturday, and the children’s masked parade with witches, the highlight is Sunday’s Grand Carnival, which always begins “at exactly around 12:32.” The parade features legendary and mythical creatures typical of the region surrounding Lake Cerknica. Customs such as “Sawing the hag” and “Burying the carnival effigy” offer a humorous and satirical glimpse into the wit and character of the local people.
Throughout carnival week, visitors can enjoy concerts, masked parties, exhibitions of carnival masks, and creative workshops for children. During the carnival, Cerknica becomes the capital of merriment and good cheer.
