Nanos – Suhi vrh, 1313 m
Nanos is a mighty karst plateau between the Postojna Basin and the Vipava Valley. Its silhouette is the most recognisable accompaniment to the route to the Adriatic Sea. The highest peak of the plateau is the 1313m high Suhi vrh.
On the way to the top, you can observe a mix of Alpine and Mediterranean flora, and from the summit you can enjoy views of the Julian Alps and the Adriatic Sea. Several hiking trails of varying difficulty lead to Suhi vrh, and cycling is also possible on the gravel road.
There are several marked mountaineering and other trails on the slopes of Nanos. Once you reach the top, you can get food and drink from the Vojko Mountain Hut (1240 m), which is open from the start of June to the end of September. Nanos is an extremely popular hill for day hikes as the top of the plateau offers amazing views of the Green Karst and the Vipava Valley, all the way to Nova Gorica and the Sabotin Hill. Nanos is also a part of the long-distance hiking trails Via Dinarica and Via Alpina, and the E6 European long-distance path.
Access recommendations:
- The most common starting point is Razdrto (car park by the motorway); the marked moderately difficult route (2–3 hours) is also suitable for families with older children
- Podnanos is the starting point of a longer and more varied mountain trail; it is also the starting point of the demanding mountain-bike trail to Suhi vrh
Use appropriate equipment and mountain maps for mountain trails! You can also take a guided tour.
