Lake Cerknica, the largest intermittent lake in Europe

See an unusual tiny corner of the world that's once a lake, sometimes a meadow, but always a natural wonder. Experience the changing world of Europe's largest intermittent lake, which floods and dries up throughout the year. It's different every time you visit!

Its unusual life was scientifically described by the polyhistor Janez Vajkard Valvasor already in the 17th century. The lake is part of the Notranjska Regional Park, which invites you to enjoy a variety of experiences.

In spring and autumn, when the lake is full, you can take a boat or canoe out on the lake. In all seasons, the lake is a popular starting point for cycling and hiking trips in the surrounding area – to Rakov Škocjan, Slivnica – the witch mountain, or the mysterious Križna jama Cave. Lake Cerknica is a paradise for photographers, ornithologists and anyone fascinated by karst phenomena.
